Partnerships

Books for Africa could not be what it is today without the important partnerships that we have created with organizations both on campus as well as off campus. Below you can find information about these organizations and, when available, links to these organizations webpage.

Partnerships On Campus:

GW Organization of African Students

A common purpose has naturally united our two organizations to create one of the most dynamic partnerships on campus.  It is this fruitful partnership that has produced successful events on our campus such as Africa Week--a creation of our two organizations.  We have no doubt that this partnership will continue to expand in the near future, as the Organization of African Students helps us connect to other university ASA's and organize book drives there.

The Organization of African Students is dedicated to increasing awareness of issues related to Africa at The Geroge Washington University and in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

GW BOOKSTORE

Another succesful partnership, the GW Bookstore has helped us collect books and organize book drives since the very beginning. During the buy-back period the bookstore donates to our student organization any books that are not bought back by the bookstore. Students can also bring their books to the bookstore and drop them off in our collection boxes.

The GW Bookstore is located at the lower level of the Marvin Center at 800 21st Street NW, Washington, DC 20052.

GW CHAPTER OF GOLDEN KEY

Golden Key members have participated in Books for Africa events in numerous ways, from advertising for our activities to collecting books.

Golden Key International Honors Society is an academic honour society which recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence among college and university students from all academic disciplines.
Members are connected to exclusive career opportunities and assistance through Golden Key's partnerships with major corporations and graduate programs. The Society provides campus and community service
opportunities enabling personal growth and leadership development as well as collaborating with university faculty and administrators to develop and maintain high standards of education.

Community Partners:

Better World Books (BWB)

Our student organization was very fortunate to create a partnership with Better World Books (BWB). Better World Books has made it possible for us to send books to Africa since December of 2003, and we hope we can continue to work together for many years more.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of unwanted books end up in landfills in the US. The winner of the 2003 McClosky Social Venture Competition, Better World Books, is putting an end to this waste. BWB uses the untapped value in unwanted books to run a completely self-sustaining operation to fund world literacy. A book collected by BWB is used in one of two ways: it is either sold to raise funding, or shipped directly overseas. Every book that is sold pays for 7 other books to be shipped overseas.

Walter Johnson High School

Our favorite school in the neighborhood, Walter Johnson High has made it possible for our organization to access thousands of children's books.  Our partnership with the Walter Johnson Booster Club is a model for every school on how collaboration between the community and community service organzations can expand educational reach beyond borders.

The Walter Johnson community promotes academic rigor, social, and emotional growth.

Zipcar

Zipcar  has made it possible for our organization to reserve cars and transport hundreds of boxes of books to and from our partner universities around Washington, DC.  Thanks to Zipcar, a process that was usually complicated, expensive, and dreary has now become simple, inexpensive, and enjoyable.

Zipcar is an example of how innovative businesses can harmonize business goals with the values of their customers and their communities.

Books for Africa (BFA)

We were first surprised to learn that there existed another organization called Books for Africa. Today we work together with this organization that is based over 600 miles away.

Books For Africa. A simple name for a simple organization with a simple mission. Based on Minnesota this NGO collects, sorts, ships and distributes books to students in Africa. Their goal: to end the book famine in Africa.
