October 2009 Spotlight Winners:

Trafficking Free GW & Latinas Promoviendo Communidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc.

Trafficking Free GW has been busy this fall in order to spread the word about human trafficking.  During September, as part of Human Trafficking Awareness month, Trafficking Free GW attended ‘A Night of Freedom’ at Nationals Park wearing anti-trafficking shirts to raise awareness about the issue.  Additionally, the organization participated in DC's ‘Stop Child Trafficking Now’ Walk at Meridian Hill Park.  Along with Inter-varsity Christian, their team raised $250 for the walk.  In order to support Courtney's House, the first shelter for sex trafficking victims in DC, Trafficking Free GW held a bake sale and will continue to fundraise for the new shelter over the course of the year.  Teaming up with Student for Fair Trade, they worked on an event to promote slave labor-free candy.  Moreover, the Daily Colonial recently featured Trafficking Free GW in an article about human trafficking.

Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc is a sorority under the Multicultural Greek Council that is currently functioning as a one woman show.  This one woman show has proved to be exemplary in all efforts of community service, inclusive programming for Greeks and non-Greeks and support of other campus initiatives, all the while maintaining academic achievement.  Brittany Morrett, the sole member of this chapter never fails to keep the Greek Life office informed of events and other endeavors.  The org is present and heavily involved in the Multicultural Greek Council. During Latino Heritage Month, the org hosted several events including an annual cosponsored program with Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. entitled "Hispanic Women of Excellence." Another event hosted members of congress just as Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc hosts its traditional “How to Survive DC, Latina Style” each fall semester.
