Active Minds at George Washington is our local
chapter of the national a non-profit organization Active Minds, Inc.
At GW we want to educate students about the
prevalence of mental illness; the risks, signs and symptoms of particular
mental illnesses; and be an available resource for seeking help.
We want to expose students to the "mentally ill" and show you that
people with mental illness are not just the "crazy" people they see
in movies; they are students who sit next to them in class, and celebrities who
seem to be "normal" - all people who live exciting, fulfilling lives
with mental illness.
We are working to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Stigma
is what stands in the way of your peers seeking medical treatment.
We plan campus-friendly events that attract as much of our community as
possible. Since 1 in 5 people suffer from a mental illness, we are all
somehow affected.
