    Striving for Greatness

    Andrew Rigefsky

When I was younger, I had a teacher tell me:

“Andy, surely you’ll be the one to make it.”

“You’ll make it big.” I’ve constantly heard.

Apparently I had the “It gene.”

The unequivocal mark of a star, one destined

To find himself a tsunami in the tides of history.

This, of course, was complete and utter bullcrap

For I was no sparkling Mother Teresa, no Gandhi.

(First, I’m too fragile for any Indian summers.)

Second, I am constantly reminding myself

That I strive to be like Mary Magdalene.

I would rather drown with my head held high.

Everyone should know I’m not so lofty.

Sure, I could be in the pages of a history book,

But I’ll probably end up there as a whore.
