Downtown Penance
Two people, sunk into a booth in a racket of a diner Stuck to the greasy nylon seats of a sticky situation The conversation is pregnant, Just off Union Square This October, her birthmonth The weather is regrettably cold And they eat, to fill the void in the gut of this fall morning His is tall, exotic-seeming, with eyes As if you were staring at the crucifix In the Gothic cathedral up 1st Avenue They command your attention--dark, direct, and dire.
She glances emptily at the Greek waiters Bustling ad nauseum with "Omelet! Coffee! BLT!" Slowly detaching herself from the burden across the booth The man with the crucifix eyes loves her unconditionally But this is diner-side-confession Saturday And she can no longer smile softly.
