About Us

Founded in the fall of 2005, the primary purpose of this student organization at George Washington University is to advance the cause for Puerto Rico to become the 51st state of the United States of America.  To do this, the Puerto Rico Statehood Society will work to create awareness about the current undemocratic, unjust, and colonial political status that Puerto Rico has been facing for the last 108 years as a U.S. territory.

Such concept involves having 4 million disenfranchised U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico who are denied the rights and responsibilities enjoyed by their fellow U.S. citizens living in the 50 states.  This is incompatible with the most basic principles of democracy and equality of which the United States is based on.  The Puerto Rico Statehood Society will make the case for the United States to finally put an end to colonialism by granting Puerto Rico its rightful place among the other 50 stars.
