Welcome to the
Public Health Student Association!

The George Washington University Public Health Student Association (PHSA) is comprised of current students and alumni of The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS). We strive to improve the academic, professional, and social environment for the community.

All of our events are open to the entire SPHHS student body. All students are considered PHSA members; there is no formal induction or acceptance process. The PHSA board works to accurately represent the interests of the entire SPHHS student body.

Please don't hesitate to contact our current PHSA board if you have ideas about events or projects we could get involved with!

Active Living and Healthy Eating

SPHHS Courtyard 12pm – 3pm

The Public Health Student Association invites you to join us in kicking off National Public Health Week by gathering in the SPHHS Courtyard to participate in a Sidewalk Chalk Contest to develop health promotion and wellness messages.  Come and show off your artistic side by crafting messages with sidewalk chalk to promote Monday’s theme of Active Living and Healthy Eating.  Every hour a number of contestants will be selected as winners, and will receive vouchers to attend a Group Fitness Class at Lerner Health and Wellness.

SPHHS Courtyard 3pm – 6pm

The Public Health Student Association will be promoting healthy eating by hosting a Healthy Happy Hour that is a perfect fit for the warmer weather!  Join PHSA board members and other classmates for an ice cream extravaganza.  As attendees enjoy their ice cream they can take some time to appreciate the Health Promotion Messages that others have created with sidewalk chalk earlier in the day!

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs

SPHHS Courtyard 12pm – 3pm

Colonials for clean air will be present with GW-SAPHA to talk about the purpose of their petition: to advocate for clean air in the GWU campus area. As stated on the organization's webpage, second hand smoke is a major cause of death. The goal is to reduce second hand smoke inhalation by petitioning that smokers be at least 25 feet from school buildings. GW-SAPHA will be hosting games and trivia activities during this time as well!

Location TBD 3pm – 4pm

People often turn to alcohol or drugs as a form of stress relief. However, instead of turning to bad behaviors, we should turn to healthier alternatives. Pilates is one form of exercise that focuses on movement of the body, strengthening the core, and relieving stress. Overall, exercising leads to healthier, happier people. GW-SAPHA will be hosting a FREE Pilates class for all GW graduate and Undergraduate students on Tuesday to promote the idea of using alternative methods to de-stress!

SPHHS Courtyard 4pm – 6pm

Join GW-SAPHA in the courtyard to commit to a healthier lifestyle by signing personal petitions!  Members of GW-SAPHA and your fellow classmates will be on hand to discuss alternatives to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs!
