Maybe you’re lonely

buying a cat.
They’re soft and sweet,
yes, but like cars
or homes or children,
they have hidden costs.
Extra keys for the pet sitter,
peroxide, new socks,
stitches, new rugs.
And on Saturday nights,
coming home from the bar,
an extra question:
Are you allergic to cats?
