Always thought
that tang outsie
after warm rain was creosote.
Looked it up, and found:
sappy stuff on telephone poles,
roofing tar-
the sharp clean scent
coming from the road,
something else.
Smell of winter is a
hint of woodsmoke,
promise of snow
more a premonition
than a smell but
felt in the nose first.
Smell of spring is
Creosote – my mother
called it that
the first time I asked,
first time I knelt
to drink in the
scent of a warm,
clean street –
called it that, the first time
I asked.
