The
George Washington University Toastmasters Club is one of many chapters in the internationally
renowned network of public speaking organizations known as Toastmasters
International. We are in our third year at Foggy Bottom and are open to any
student, alum, faculty, staff, or community member.
Toastmasters helps
our members improve their public speaking skills and develop their
communication and leadership skills to use in academic, professional, and
personal settings. We meet on campus several times per month, providing members
and guests with several opportunities to participate in meetings.
Three meetings are
held each month. The meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday, the second
Wednesday, and the third Thursday of each month, during which members and
guests may deliver and receive feedback on impromptu and prepared speeches. For
confirmed meeting dates and times please view the schedule.
Throughout the
semester, our club also hosts special meetings wherein members and guests can
listen to modules prepared by Toastmasters International as well as speeches
done by invited guests. Over the past few years, our club has hosted special
guests including a communications professor from UDC and GWU Professor Lee
Huebner, who was a speechwriter from the Nixon Administration. Our members have
also participated in Toastmasters International speech contests. Just this
spring, one member made his way up to the Division Contest. We are very proud
of our past accomplishments and look forward to more in the upcoming year.
Guests are welcome to
attend and even participate in GWU Toastmasters meetings before committing to
join. Club dues are $60 per year; new members are required to pay an additional
$20 fee that covers introductory speech materials and a membership to
Toastmasters International. Dues can be paid in installments as well as pro-rated
for those who join Toastmasters after the beginning of the semester.
Toastmasters
International is recognized by many businesses worldwide and is a great résumé
builder. By joining GWU Toastmasters, new members have the opportunity to
deliver and evaluate prepared speeches as well as participate in other meeting
roles that equip participants with the confidence needed to make that important
presentation. Additionally, Toastmasters opens the door for members to begin
their journey on the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership
tracks, which if completed, lead to the coveted Distinguished Toastmaster
Award.
GWU Toastmasters is a
great investment in your future and I look forward to seeing you at a
Toastmasters meeting on campus!
