Welcome
to GWU Toastmasters!
Toastmasters
International is an internationally-renowned organization whose members strive
to improve their public speaking and develop leadership skills. GWU
Toastmasters is a small chapter of the international organization. We
form a unique niche as part of the international organization because we are a
student club. We also stand out in the GW community because of our
professional focus.
We host
meetings three times a month on alternating days to accommodate our members’
schedules. These meetings are often intimate in style because we are a
medium-sized group. We have about twenty members who attend, work, or
live near the GW community.
Our one-hour
meetings are fairly structured. At a typical meeting, there will be
several 5-7 minute speeches given by members, a session of questions in which
members and guests can volunteer to answer, and an evaluation period where the
initial speakers are given praise and advice.
Our meeting
roles allow members to hone in on different types of speaking skills.
Members are given opportunities to speak with little or great
preparation. By doing so, members are able to improve their ability to
quickly organize thoughts and present information in a clear manner.
There are
other roles in our meetings that allow members to develop leadership
skills. Such roles include those in which a member is in charge of
organizing the whole meeting and those through which a member is in charge of
running just a section of the meeting.
Our members
are dedicated to improving ourselves whether as students getting ready for
interviews or as professionals.
Feel free to
browse our site. Check out the Meeting Minutes if you need a feel for how
our meetings are run or what types of topics we discuss.
