The Part-Time Faculty union is currently in bargaining negoitations with the University's hired attorneys. There has been a long fight leading up to this moment.
This phase of the campaign began only a few months ago, but the fight began on October 4, 2004 when the part-time professors voted to unionize. On June 10, 2005, SEIU 500 was certified as the exclusive collective-bargaining representative of the part-time professors. GWU failed to recognize and bargain with the Union.
Instead, they challenged the results of the election. The National Labor Relations Board ruled that GWU engaged in unfair negotiation practices. The NLRB ordered GWU to enter into contract negotiations with the Union and after several attempts to avoid bargaining, the University was finally forced to do so. The administration has argued that we, students, are not educated enough to understand the situation. Tell the university that we are of enough intelligence to understand that a talented teacher who receives a reasonable salary, benefits, and has sufficient resources, is in our best interests. The
struggle to get to this point has been just one in a long chain of
worker rights abuses by GW. It will be a great day on this campus when
we can say that all of our professors are treated with the respect they
deserve.
