Player Handbook/Guidelines

2008-09 SEASON

PLAYER HANDBOOK/GUIDELINES

PRACTICES

Practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and also on Sundays from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on the Mount Vernon Campus. Sunday practices are primarily to finish up ladder matches that did not get completed during the Tuesday and Thursday practices. (see match play section for more details). All practices are mandatory. If you are not able to attend practice, an email must be sent to the yahoo account (gwuclubtennis@yahoo.com) at least one day before practice.

While academics can be an excuse for missing practices, we all know at the beginning of the semester when our tests and papers are due. Do not send an email the day of practice saying you cannot attend because of academic purposes, plan ahead and let us know at least the day before practice. If no email is sent to the account and you do not attend practice that will be considered an unexcused absence. You are allowed three unexcused absences per semester. If you miss more than three practices without sending an email, then you will be on probation. This means that you will be considered for matches only if there is open spot after consulting the rest of the team. Traveling with the team to tournaments, match play, and ladder positions will also be in question for those that skip practice and do not let the e-board know by e-mail.

CHALLENGE MATCHES

Especially at the beginning of the season in the fall and spring, ladder matches will be played at most practices to ensure that we have a legitimate ladder. The players of the ladder match can decide if they want to play 2 out of 3 sets, or an 8 game pro-set. If there are ladder matches that were not played during the Tuesday and Thursday practices, then the matches are to be completed on Sunday. A team member can also challenge any other team member at any time and set up his or her own time to play a challenge match. If this is the case, email your final score to the club tennis email account and cc your opponent.  If you do not play challenge matches, the E-board reserves the right to put you in the ladder wherever we feel is appropriate.

MATCHES

Matches against other teams will be played on Saturdays and Sundays. The matches will be posted as soon as they are confirmed on the Website and also on a Google calendar. Please try and attend all matches. The number of matches a team member has attended will also affect whom the team takes to tournaments.

TOURNAMENTS

We will apply to go to sectionals as well as any other tournaments we are able to compete in. The outcome of regular season determines where we are seeded in tournaments. Team members that wish to go to tournaments should let the e-board know and from that, the e-board will decide who goes to the tournaments based on their commitment to the team throughout the season, their attitude, and skill level.

DUES

This is money paid to the team in order for it to function. The dues are $35 per semester. With this money, we are able to travel, and get more tennis balls for practices and matches, for example. Also, the cost of uniforms will be included in the dues. Dues must be paid by the end of the second week of practice in the fall semester. Anyone that does not pay dues will be on probation. This means that they will not be considered first choice for matches and tournaments.

WEBSITE

The website will contain information about the roster, matches, and meetings. Please check the website often. The official ladder will also be posted on the website and will be updated based on the outcome of ladder matches. Studentorgs.gwu.edu/gwclubtennis
