Lisner Downstage is the primary performance space for FPP and all of student theater. While we try each semester to utilize other spaces, and have in the past performed in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom and Continential Ballroom, as well as Mitchell Hall Theater, most of our performances take place in Lisner Downstage.
The Downstage is a black box theater located in the basement of Lisner Auditorium. The entrance to Downstage is not the main entrance to Lisner Theater; Lisner Downstage may be accessed for performances on the H st. side of Lisner on the terrace accross from the Marvin Center. Downstage seats approximately 65 patrons, depending on the configuration.
The three student theater companies have exclusive control of Lisner Downstage through the Student Theater Council (STC). Student organizations controlling their own space, including full scheduling autonomy, is extremely rare among GW student groups. Before the creation of STC and the transfer of Lisner Downstage to student theater, companies had to compete with the Theater Department and numerous other performance groups for space on campus.
Since this space is exclusively ours, STC handles fundraising for capital improvements, and enforces the rules for Lisner Downstage that each of the companies agree to. Consider getting involved with STC and working on behalf of all GW student theater, and please be aware of the rules for patrons in the theater space if you plan on auditioning or attending a show. A copy of the rules for Linser downstage can be downloaded here.
