Who We Are
In 1968, the Black Student Union of the George Washington University was established. This organization created a strong, cohesive voice for black students of The George Washington University to make their concerns heard, known and resolved. This organization was started by, consists of and solely remains for the students. Over the years, the Black Student Union has emerged as a catalyst for positive change here at The George Washington University. Our mission: in recognition of and pursuant to, the highest aspirations of social and cultural heritage the Black Student Union of The George Washington University, seeks to preserve and enhance the development of our cultural identity and the continued advancement of our people in economic, educational, political, sociological, and intellectual spheres.
What We Have Done
Over the years, the Black Student Union has been instrumental in bringing about significant change across campus. It was responsible for the implementation of the Educational Opportunity Program, which committed the university to assist financially in the enrollment of a minimum of 100 black students per year. The Black Student Union, with support from University President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, initiated the creation of the Multicultural Student Services Center, a university department that works primarily with students of color. Furthermore, it has jumpstarted numerous other programs and activities that have benefited both the black community and the campus as a whole.
Where We Are Now
The BSU will serve primarily as an advocacy group for students of color, all the while fostering cultural awareness and diversity of all forms. Now, that doesnt mean that the BSU doesn't know how to have fun. The BSU is still a social group as well, and we are committed to ensuring that The George Washington University knows who we are! This year we have a host of events planned, including, but not limited to, the 1st Annual Black Greek Symposium, Meet The Financial Aid Representatives, and the first-ever Black Faculty Lecture Series. And you won't believe what we have planned for Black History Celebration! We plan to have the best year in recent memory.
Where We Are Going
With your help, the Black Student Union can reach its goals of a higher minority student admissions rate, and more involvement from our black community. We want our brothers and sisters to run for student government, and other leadership positions to reestablish our presence here at GWU, and extend it far beyond what anyone imagined. With your help we can make future Black History Celebrations as amazing as the one previous. With your help we can extend our presence and prestige. With your help the Black Student Union will continue in its work, and we look forward to your involvement.
