About Us Books for Africa Student Organization is an organization created by students at The George Washington University. Our objective is to send used college student books to African Communities in order to help them reduce costs of building community libraries and educational centers in their towns. By making educational material more available to these African communities we are also giving individuals the materials necessary for them to develop their intellect and imagination so they can draft a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Since Books for Africa Student Organization was first created in October of 2002 we have collected over 50,000 books and sent them to Africa. This accomplishment was achieved by working hard inside The George Washington University campus, but also by expanding our program to other universities in the area such as Georgetown University, George Mason University, Johns Hopkins University, and James Madison University. A chapter of our student organization was officially opened in James Madison last year, and we are looking to open more chapters of our student organization in other campuses soon. We organize two book drives per year, one held in May and the other one held in December, which are the times when students are done using their books, and are more likely to donate them to us. To get the books we collect to Africa, we have worked with the World Bank Book Project, Better World Books, and an NGO in Minnesota called Books for Africa. More information and links to these organizations can be found under the side tab named partnerships. To further inform you about our student and our book drives this page has links to our previous book drive results so that you can monitor our development from year to year.
