Alpha Chi Sigma is a co-ed professional fraternity in chemistry. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, or creed. Membership is open for Chemistry, Biology, and Pre-med Students (as a general rule of thumb as long as you are going to take Organic Chemistry you are welcome to join us!) Membership in our Fraternity does not block you from joining any other professional or social Greek life Fraternities or Sororities. Many of our members past and present have had majors ranging from Chemistry to History to Mathematics and have often been apart of our professional fraternity while still participating in other social fraternities or sororities on campus.
As a group we take part in several volunteer activities throughout the academic school year. We also provide free weekly tutoring sessions held in Samson Hall for any GW student who needs a little extra help no matter which chemistry course they are enrolled in. Most importantly, we are a tight brotherhood of students in the Sciences and though our fraternity we have a deep and strong system of support for each other throughout all of our course work at GW.
Our Brotherhood is defined by the Fraternity’s Three Objects, which are:
- To bind its members with a tie of true and lasting friendship.
- To strive for the advancement of chemistry both as a science and as a profession.
- To aid its members by every honorable means in the attainment of their ambitions as chemists throughout their mortal lives.
If you have any questions about our Fraternity or are interested in joining, please visit the “Pledging” section of our website.
More Information on our Professional Fraternity from the National Chapter:
There is no organization quite comparable to a professional fraternity. Socially, it presents members with the opportunity of meeting those interested in their work. Fraternal bonds are ever so much stronger than professional ones, but there are no bonds as strong as those created through combined fraternal and professional interests. Members of Alpha Chi Sigma, many of whom are leaders in the industrial and scientific world, all share common fraternal ideals. Purely professional organizations such as the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers have their place, and Alpha Chi Sigma constantly encourages its members to become active in these organizations. Social fraternities also offer much to the student, but only a professional fraternity--and Alpha Chi Sigma is the only national professional chemistry fraternity in the United States--can provide the college student and the professional in chemistry and related fields with the interests and bonds of a fraternity.
